Social engineering!!!
Joined an engineering college at Nizamabad as head Computer Science.
Nizamabad being my in-laws place, place where I constructed my house,
place Where I already worked in some other college, place where my daughter and wife were yearning to go back from Hyderabad. That clinched my decision inspite of all the temptations of Hyderabad:”it’s a happening place, good for children’s education, good for career, you will learn more, earn more.”
Joined a new college: Number of students:-nil, Number of Staff:- me and the
Principal. Status of college: - yet to be inspected by jntu and aicte forget about approval. Everything Happened be it inspection, staff recruitment, building completion but not without some anxious moments. Likewise student admissions started, all the surrounding colleges being established and with a standing of 5 to 10 years could garner seatsand our admissions were happening at a snail’s place. In spite of our claims that we are going to follow all the best practices be it teaching, equipment we cold get around 90 seats out of 240. Our very survival was in question, will the management run the college, will staff stay back, salaries will be paid in time or not, further constructions, purchases or expenses will be done or not, all these questions were lingering in our minds. Then entered our messiah a shortish man( 3 feet) with very ordinary features with a claim that he can make at least 100 to 150 admissions for our college under spot admission and he will charge some amount per student and he did it . Now we have around 220 admissions. We asked him what his modus operandi was. He said he goes to remote villages, contact students, parents, village elders and make them write eamcet exams the qualifying exam for engineering admission. Then all these students who belong to the category of sc/st are made to take admission in a college like ours during spot and they don’t appear for eamcet counseling, after government funds are released he will get his share and the colleges theirs. He said he usually earns around 5 to 6 lakhs. Hat’s off to his marketing skills, patience, convincing abilities and in my view he is doing great social service by giving engineering education opportunity to underprivileged people!
